Artists in Residency

An artist in residence facilitates classroom workshops for students and gives students an in-depth experience in bullying prevention and conflict resolution.

The objectives:

  1. Make students aware of what bullying behavior is and its detrimental affects on those involved with it.
  2. Provide "I statements" that can empower students to stand up for themselves or a classmate without becoming a victim themselves.
  3. Discussing with students why and when it is their best choice to tell a "safe" adult.
  4. Schools Home Artists in Residency School Programs Encouraging bystanders to unite together in force to stop bully behaviors.

Judy's program for Primary Grades uses a "Buddy Being" (a large drawing of a person) with their ideas of what a buddy, or kind person would say and how that person would act. The use of ventriloquism demonstrates bully behaviors and the hurt that goes with it. Activities involve students in practicing kindness, developing awareness of what is unacceptable behavior. A ventriloquist routine demonstrates the "Stop Sign Rule." A discussion follows to clarify our options and what we really want instead of losing control and reacting when we get angry.

Judy's program for fourth through sixth grades uses skits, ventriloquist routines, discussion, diagrams, and creative problem solving activities using "What If situations." An example activity is, "standing in another person's shoes." Another activity uses "statements" that are practiced by students. A follow-up discussion about how they handle teasing, name-calling and exclusion completes the activity. Artist in Residence can spend up to a week visiting each classroom, providing more in-depth group work and more one-on-one with the students.

This Artist in Residence can include whole school assemblies as well as an evening workshop for parents.

In October, Harwinton School used Judy for three keynote presentations, workshops for each classroom, plus and an evening workshop for parents and teachers. The website address is: www.region10ct.org
